Week 1 Notes

By signing up for this class, you have committed yourself to a minimum of 7 hours per week working on the class work. In some cases you may need to spend up to 10 hours a week. This is pretty typical for an online class, as I explained in your welcome email and video. If you don't have that much time, I suggest you find another time to take ENG102 when you do have more time. If you do have the time, then let's get started. Everything that you will need to do this week is listed below. Be sure to click through each activity and read, watch and do everything listed. Remember generally everything is due on Sunday by midnight, with the exception of some discussion forums AND the Orientation. I've placed estimated times for completing activities next to the major assignments below to help you plan your time accordingly. To be successful, I recommend you find time 3 times during the week to work on your assignments. DO NOT wait until the weekend to do everything. That makes for a pretty sucky weekend and rushed work. Plan for 4-5 hours total this week.

Instructional Objectives

This week students will:

discuss personal freedoms and explore possible research topics in a class discussion,
review the research process in a lesson, and
complete the class orientation.

Orientation

You must complete the orientation before you can begin the course. Click the tab to the right to get started. The Orientation must be completed by Wednesday of Week 1 to remain registered in this class. Plan for 2-4 hours to complete the Orientation.

Week 1 Reading

Online Handbook in Connect Composition

Chapter 15: Understanding Research (online handbook) - Plan for 30 minutes. After reading this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:

What is the difference between primary and secondary research?
What writing situation does my assignment specify?
How can I think of a topic for my research paper?

Week 1 Lessons

Lesson 1.1 Understanding Research - In this lesson, we will walk through the first 6 steps of the 8-step research process. Plan for 30-40 minutes. The lesson includes audio, so make sure your speakers are working. Be sure to answer any quiz questions in the lesson.
Lesson 1.2 Getting Started with the Research Process - This lesson is a video of the research process we will follow in this class. It outlines our first steps we'll get started on next week. Plan for 10 minutes. Be sure to answer any quiz questions in the lesson.

Week 1 Group Discussion

Read the requirements for group discussions. Read the Discussion Rubric: Discussion Rubric

Participate in the group discussion: Discussion #1: Personal Freedoms Issues. Plan for 45-60 minutes.

One final note:

If you are NOT using your Maricopa.edu email address, you will need to forward that email address to one you check regularly. You are responsible for checking your Maricopa email at least three times a week.
