Week 4 Notes

It's time to plan your final project in the form of an outline. It's still early on, so don't fuss too much about all the specific of your outline. Right now you just want to get some ideas down. You can and will change them as your project evolves. You're not married to this first draft. We'll end this module with a quiz that will cover the chapters in the online handbook and the lessons presented here on Canvas. Plan for 6 to 6 1/2 hours total this week.

Week 4 Instructional Objectives

This week students will:

generate original ideas in an outline for a position or proposal paper,
present an idea persuasively in an academic, college-level outline (Full Outline),
refine strategies of academic research, including selecting a topic and defining the issue or problem.

Week 4 Reading

Online Handbook

Chapter 10: Arguments - This is a very important chapter with lots of pertinent information you will need to learn. Plan for 1 hour 30 minutes. After reading this chapter, you should be able to answer the following questions:

How do I evaluate arguments presented by others and then how do I construct arguments on important issues?
What is inductive and deductive reasoning and how do I recognize them?
What is the Toulmin method of argumentation?
What are the three types of evidences for claims?
What are the three rhetorical appeals?
What are fallacies and how do I avoid them?

Handouts:

Position and Proposal Arguments - This handout explains the two types of paper from which you will choose to write your final research paper. It's best to understand both methods before making a choice, as your argument may lend itself better for one over the other. Plan for 30 minutes.

Week 4 Lessons

Lesson 4.1 Writing an Outline - This lesson will present you with the steps involved in creating an outline for the research paper. Plan for 10 minutes.
Lesson 4.2 Writing Arguments - In this lesson, we will be covering the basic format of how to structure an argument. This includes the general written argument structure, and the Position and Proposal variations of that basic form. Plan for 30 minutes.

Paper 1: Full Outline

Paper 1: Position/Proposal Paper Full Outline - 50 pts - This is the foundation for the final project. It's best to spend plenty of time planning in this outline in order for you to be successful down the road. Plan for 2 hours here.

Module I Quiz covers all the reading from Module I. That includes the online handbook chapter 21 for this module. The quiz will be available on Connect Composition 2.0 from Thursday until Monday only.
